A Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are finally into December, and it's definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Our school Christmas trees and decorations went up this week and there is now an entire section of our library dedicated to books about Christmas. A short while ago, twenty-four members of staff recorded a set of Christmas stories for the children to enjoy from home. They are still available on the website and can be found using this link: Advent Story Time.

Nativity

I say it every year, but a primary school is the best place to work in December. We have so many events and Christmas-based activities going on that it is hard not to get into the festive spirit! Yesterday we welcomed a hall full of Foundation Stage family members into school to watch the Magpies and Penguins perform their nativity. They were excellent! They read their words confidently, sang loudly and put a smile on everyone's face. Well done Foundation Stage! We are now looking forward to Year Two's performances next week.

Next Week

Our diary dates meeting took a little longer than usual on Wednesday as we have so much happening in school next week. The book fair arrives, we have a surprise visitor for Year Six, the Year Two performance and the FOWS Christmas fayre to name just a few! We hope to see many of you at the Christmas fayre after school on Friday 9th December.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

Kind regards

Mr Marks

Headteacher

FOWS Christmas Events

By Jo Watson, FOWS Chair

Christmas Fair Friday 9th December

On the 9th December our Christmas fair will be taking place from 3.30-5.30 pm in the Hall and Music room.  This will be our first Christmas Fayre since 2019, and we are so looking forward to seeing you and the children enjoying the stalls and taking part in all the activities.  Father Christmas is booked, and the elves are busy wrapping presents for us.

Please return the stubs, money and / or any unsold raffle tickets to school as soon as possible – you might be lucky and win one of the many fantastic prizes!

Christmas Sale (Elfridges) Wednesday 14th December

Our much-loved Christmas pop up shop is back for 2022.  During the school day on the 14th of December each class will be invited to pop along to purchase Christmas gifts for family members.  We have a variety of gifts for all the family (including pets).  Gifts will be priced at £1, £2 and £3.  Please send your child to school with a carrier bag for their purchases and some money to spend in a named wallet/envelope.  Each child will be limited to 3 purchases each to make sure everyone has the opportunity to purchase gifts.

Thank you!

We really appreciate all the donations you have given us throughout the year to help make these events possible.  All money raised goes towards improving the school for the children. This year FOWS have contributed to the new bike sheds fund, library books and other activities run in the school thanks to past fundraising events, the Christmas fair will enable us to continue to do so, with some exciting projects in the pipeline.

Christmas Card Competition 2022

By Mrs Granville, RE and LKS2 Lead

Reverend Alexandra from St Andrews Church in Alwalton visited on Wednesday to announce the winner of the Christmas Card Competition. Congratulations to the winning entry, which came from a child in the Giraffes.

She was presented with a framed copy of her design, and one of the parish Christmas cards. If you live in Wistow, Alwalton, Southgate or Northgate, look out for the cards dropping through your doors very soon!

Celebrating Success 02.12.22

Here at Orton Wistow Primary School, we recognise that success comes in all different shapes and sizes! We celebrate the children's achievements in school in the Achievements section of the newsletter and website.

Many of the children, however, are also achieving things outside of school.  We would like to recognise these successes too.

It might be that your child has passed a music or dance exam, gained a karate belt, starred in a show, volunteered, taken part in a sporting event, or done something that they didn't think was possible!

If you would like to share your child's achievements with us so that we can celebrate their success, please complete the Celebrating Success form. Contributions will be considered for inclusion in upcoming editions of the newsletter.

We look forward to hearing about your children's extracurricular achievements!

Celebrating Success this week!

This child in Year 4 passed her grade 3 in figure skating, which is a fantastic achievement!  Well done!

At the end of November, Jake in Year 6 was at his Nan and Grandad's when his Grandad had a medical emergency. His nan (who is 80 years old) was helping his Grandad, so Jake managed to call for an ambulance for her and then called his parents to come and help. Whilst they were on our way, Jake helped by staying calm and getting people drinks.  Well done Jake, you did really well in a difficult situation!

The Library Corner - December 2022

By Mrs Campling, School Librarian

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And we’ve been as busy as Father Christmas himself getting ready for it. As the school were all occupied on Tuesday watching Foundation’s GORGEOUS nativity, I took the opportunity to ‘wrap up’ the bookcase and leave it as a big festive surprise ready for the start of December. By Thursday afternoon there was a hum of speculation about what could possibly be behind the wrapping (of a bookcase…in a library…). The Wombats and Iguanas were the lucky ones who got to tear off the wrapping to reveal a whole bookcase full of Christmas books, including some brand new ones for this year! (Of course it was absolutely necessary for me to read most of them first, to be sure that they are Christmassy enough, and as you’ll see in this month’s recommendations section they do not disappoint!)

Author of the Month

The Author of the Month display has also been seasonally updated to Alex T Smith, an author I personally love (and I know last year’s Year 3 did too) and who has written many Christmassy books, including How Winston Delivered Christmas; The Grumpus; and The 12 Days of Christmas, or Grandma is Overly Generous. His non-festive titles are big favourites here, from Little Red & the Very Hungry Lion to Mr Penguin (intrepid Indiana Jones-esque explorer with kung-fu spider sidekick Colin). There’s plenty to choose from!

Story Writing Club

This week we came to the end of this term’s Story Writing Club. It was a very disjointed term due to illnesses, inset days and the like, but that didn’t stop the children from coming up with creative and inventive stories on a variety of themes; unicorn princesses, chicken nugget dragons, and a secret detective agency! We also saw the last Library Club before Christmas, which has been a really enjoyable new venture. The brilliant Y6 Library Ambassadors have prepared scavenger hunts, games, and read with the children who attend and I know that they have all enjoyed having a little extra library time!

The Grumpus by Alex T Smith - I loved this book SO MUCH that I’ve bought myself a copy and added it to my ‘essential books to read in December otherwise Christmas won’t even happen’ list. Imagine the concept of The Grinch, add in lots of animal antics, some stinky sprouts and a sprinkling of magic, and you still won’t have captured just how funny, heartwarming and festive this book is. 100% recommend!

Operation Nativity by Jenny Pearson - Whilst this is a children’s book (under 8s probably best to read with an adult) I have seen SO MANY of my adult friends reading this too. Siblings Oscar and Molly are staying at their grandparents’ (very fancy) country house for Christmas when a mysterious object crash lands in the field nearby. It’s the Angel Gabriel - and he’s accidentally transported himself, a shepherd, a wise man, Mary, Joseph and a donkey into the future! Oscar & Molly help him track everyone down so that the first Christmas can happen when and where it’s supposed to, with plenty of hi-jinks along the way. An emotional ending but plenty of giggles throughout.

Kid Christmas of the Claus Brothers’ Toy Shop by David Litchfield - This gorgeous picture book is a twist on the typical Father Christmas origin story. Nicky Claus works at his uncles’ toy shop when he notices some children who are always looking through the window but never come in. He follows them home one day and discovers a whole community of children living underground on their own, and promises that he will do all he can to ensure that every child can receive a gift at Christmas. With the help of his three uncles (one who makes the toys, one who checks them, and one who adds the *magic*) he devises a way to deliver toys across the whole city, and eventually, the world. The illustrations are stunning and there are some lovely details (such as the reason why we hang fairy lights at Christmas!) which makes this a really warm, cosy read.

We have the Book Fair in school next week and children will be browsing before opening to shop at the Christmas Fair on Friday 9th. If you’re unable to attend, there is also a ‘mop-up’ session on Monday 12th, after school in the library.
