A Message from OWPS

Dear Parents and Carers,

Another busy, vibrant week comes to an end here at OWPS.

World Book Day always injects some fun and enthusiasm into our school day and this year yet again has seen some amazing costume efforts. Fostering a love of reading continues to remain a priority in our classrooms in the knowledge that reading is the single most important indicator of a child’s future success. This year’s theme is based on ‘Read Your Way,’ following research which shows that children feel reading is something they have to do, rather than something they choose to do. ‘Read Your Way’ encourages everyone to let go of reading pressures and expectations, and empowers children to have fun discovering reading on their own terms. The World Book Day website has some great recommendations for families on how to unlock the fun of reading and avoid it feeling like hard work.

Year 6 Mock SATs

This week our Year 6 children have taken part in a practice run of the SATs tests they will be undertaking in May. They have attended a breakfast club each day and completed each test in the same conditions they are likely to see for their real ones. Mocks allow for our Year 6 staff to gauge children’s attainment and to know the specific areas they can target through teaching in the next few weeks whilst also supporting the children to become familiar with the arrangements, hopefully minimising the anticipation when the real time comes. Year 6 have been superb in their attitude and effort during this week, the Year 6 team have all commented on their maturity and responsibility. Well done!

Drop off and Pick up

A polite reminder that when the gates open for morning registration and home-time, that parents and carers must remain on the playgrounds and not enter the school building. We ask you to walk around the outside of the school building to collect siblings and not to use the school as a shortcut. To safeguard our children and staff any visits to school must be through our school office, with the necessary sign in procedure in place.

Baby News

Lastly, I’m delighted to share with you that Mrs Aldred, HLTA, is expecting a baby in July. I’m sure you will join us in congratulating her on this wonderful news.

I wish you a very happy weekend- it looks like there will be plenty of opportunity to get outside!
