Issue 370: 3rd December 2021

A Message from the Deputy Head Teacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

December is here and it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas! As well as putting up our tree in the hall along with some other decorations, every child has made their own to decorate their classroom, and they will bring them home at the end of the term for you to keep. My mum still has some my siblings and I created when we were at school! Last year we recorded a Christmas story for each day in December leading up to Christmas and we have now made all of these available on the school website for you to enjoy. Just visit this page - Advent Story Time - click on a number and enjoy.

The Foundation Stage children put on a wonderful Nativity for the school to watch this week. It was most likely their first time on stage and every child should feel proud of how they performed. The Foundation Stage staff also wanted to pass on their thanks to the audience for both performances. They sat very quietly whilst our youngest pupils performed and smiled throughout the show. The video of this performance is currently in production and will be shared with the FS parents when it is ready. Although not the same as seeing the live performance, more family members will be able to enjoy it and the children will be able to watch themselves and their friends acting and singing on stage.

On Wednesday morning I joined Mr. Newton for an ABQM meeting (Anti-Bullying Quality Mark). We were also joined by Jackie Johnson (learning mentor), Adam Green (Governor), two parents and two Year Five children. We currently hold the silver award and we are looking at ways to improve our practice even further at OWPS, aiming to achieve the gold standard award. Our main focus for discussion was on ways that we can have a further positive impact, not only on our school but within our local community and other schools. There were some great contributions from all those who attended and Mr. Newton, who is our anti-bullying lead, will now decide on our next steps. We were all keen on exploring ways to share the school's approach to this area with parents and carers and there will be information sent home in a variety of formats in the future.

Although all statutory assessments were cancelled last Summer, like the previous year, Year Two children completed a phonics screening check this term (usually done at the end of Year One). The children completed these assessments with confidence and we have seen a 93% pass rate. This is higher than the national average (82% in 2019) and a reflection of the quality of phonics teaching in our school and the hard work we see from the children every day. Well done to all those involved.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Mr. Marks

Deputy Head Teacher

Healthy Schools and Food Smart Bronze Award

On 24th November 2021, Healthy Schools Cambridgeshire and Peterborough presented a Healthy School and Food Smart Bronze Award to Ms Porter and the Eco Warriors, together with our Catering Manager, Mrs Anderson.

The aim of the Bronze Award is to encourage schools to review the initiatives in place and the work being carried out to improve the health, wellbeing and resilience of the school community.

Ms Porter worked with other OWPS staff to bring together the evidence for how Orton Wistow Primary School is achieving in these key areas.

Healthy Schools Cambridgeshire and Peterborough praised the school's commitment to embedding a whole school approach to health and wellbeing:

"The commitment to embedding a whole school approach to health and wellbeing throughout the school is impressive and the process of achieving these two awards has helped the staff to recognise and celebrate all the good work that they are doing currently and have plans to do in the future.

Participation in the Food Smart programme has especially impacted on the children’s knowledge of how to keep healthy, both in terms of exercise and the importance of what they eat. To quote the Healthy Schools lead teacher: “The children have learned that not all food that is advertised as “healthy” is and they have made links between exercise and a healthy diet.  Parents and carers also have more understanding of how to help at home.”

The school has a dedicated tab on its website to health and wellbeing which not only reflects the dedication of the school to this agenda but provides an ideal means of raising awareness amongst parents and carers about how they can also get involved. Take a look here:

The school is keen to move towards achieving the Silver Award.  As Ms Porter explains:

"...we are looking to complete the Silver Award to further the work we’re doing with our PSHE curriculum and Wellbeing project. One of our teachers is also completing the DfE Senior Mental Health Lead training, with the idea that this qualification will enable us to increase our support for children with difficulties and to promote positive mental health."

Careers in Stem Talk

By Mrs Simmons, DT Lead

On Monday 29th of November, we had an exciting visit from one of the engineers from Perkins, Emmy Coleman.  Emmy talked about her interests as a child and how these impacted on her choices of further study and profession.  Emmy showed the girls in Year 5 and 6 how exciting a career in the STEM subjects can be, inspiring many of our cohort into thinking about their aspirations and future careers.

Visit from Guildhall Musicians

By Mrs Phillips, Music Lead

On Friday 19th November, we had a visit from three musicians - undergraduates from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama - as part of their mini-residency with Peterborough Music Hub.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 were treated to a concert each in the hall during the afternoon. The children loved listening to the wind trio play and learning a little about their instruments: the oboe, the cor anglais and the bassoon.

We were lucky enough to hear some beautiful music, from Dvorak and Tchaikovsky to Dance Monkey and The Lion King! There was even an opportunity for a sing- and dance-along at the end.

Thank you to Peterborough Music Hub for allowing us to be involved in this wonderful event; we hope it has inspired some of the children to start learning an instrument or to take an instrument they already learn to a higher level.

Celebrating Success

Here at Orton Wistow Primary School, we recognise that success comes in all different shapes and sizes! We celebrate the children's achievements in school in the Achievements section of the newsletter and website.

Many of the children, however, are also achieving things outside of school.  We would like to recognise these successes too.

It might be that your child has passed a music or dance exam, gained a karate belt, starred in a show, volunteered, taken part in a sporting event or done something that they didn't think was possible!

If you would like to share your child's achievements with us so that we can celebrate their success, please complete the Celebrating Success form which can also be found below.  Contributions will be considered for inclusion in upcoming editions of the newsletter.

We look forward to hearing about your children's extra-curricular achievements!

Celebrating Success this week!

Congratulations to Poppy in Year 3 who decided to have her hair cut off for The Little Princess Trust.  It was all her idea after researching a charity for the sponsored event. In total, she had 8 inches taken off.  Well done Poppy!

Well done to this child in Year 3 who recently did her very first race at Ferry Meadows as part of Peterborough and Nene Valley Athletics Club. She ran 1.5 miles in 11 minutes and 37 seconds. She didn’t compete with anyone else, just ran her own race and absolutely loved it. What a fantastic achievement!

OWPS Holiday Club

By Mr Cowles, PE Lead

Starting in 2022, Mr Cowles is looking to see if there would be interest in regard to starting a half-term sports holiday club at the school. This will be available for all ages (Foundation - Year 6) and will include a wide variety of sporting games that focus on maximising fun for all!

The following short questionnaire contains three questions to gauge interest and we would be grateful if you could spare the time to complete it:

Thank you.

Notices

Reminder regarding Reporting Absences from School

If your child is going to be absent from school, please ensure that you inform us of the reason for the absence. Telling us your child is 'unwell' or 'not in today' does not give us the detail we need to apply the correct register codes.  This is especially important when your child has COVID symptoms and is getting a PCR test.

Please note that if your child is displaying any of the known COVID symptoms, a PCR test is required.  A Lateral Flow Test (LFT) cannot be not accepted in this instance.

Additionally, if your child has been for a PCR test, please ensure you inform the school office by email or phone of the results, even if your child has a negative result, again this is required for our records.

Thank you for your assistance.

RNIB Stamp Appeal

A reminder that this festive season, OWPS is collecting stamps to help raise money for Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

If you receive cards and letters through the post, please can you save the stamps and place them in our collection box in the front office at school. We will recycle them to the RNIB for much-needed funds for their services.

Recycle Print Cartridges and Raise money for OWPS

A reminder that if you have any empty ink cartridges, you can bring them in and leave them in the collection box at the front of the school.

We will receive money for the ink cartridges, and you will be helping the environment with your recycling. Thank you.

The Library Corner December 2021

By Mrs Campling, Librarian

11 Christmases ago, I had just moved to Peterborough, and was living with a very generous family from my church who had agreed to put me up until I could find my own place to live. My own family lived 2 and half hours away in Berkshire and I had been pretty lonely. Someone to whom I was very close at the time decided to get me, for Christmas, a gift to remedy this. This person thought long and hard about what to give someone who was lonely and miserable. It couldn’t be a pet, because the people I lived with already had a cat; it couldn’t be a car or train tickets because, well, expensive; and they came to the conclusion that the best gift to cheer me up that Christmas was…

A plant. Not a pretty, fragrant, pleasant plant, mind you - an ENORMOUS, spiky, poisonous-to-cats (remember I lived with a cat) fern of some sort. The gift-giver also decided that, because the plant was difficult to wrap, they would build a rudimentary teepee out of some sticks and a bedsheet, and hide the plant underneath it.

I should also point out here that a) I don’t really like plants and b) I’m the least green-fingered person you’ll ever meet (seriously, I’ve brought plants home only for them to wither the minute they cross the threshold into my garden).

Needless to say, that person is not in my life any more.

(Incidentally, the same Christmas, I was given a small cuddly Chewbacca that makes Wookie noises when you squeeze his tummy. I married the person who gave me that!)

While the above story is probably on the extreme scale of “what on earth were you thinking?”, we all know the struggle of trying to find the perfect gift, so if you’re looking to get teachers a gift this Christmas, why not peruse our wishlist, choose a book, or even get a gift voucher?

Books from the wishlist get delivered straight to school (or you can buy OFF the list if you fancy wrapping them yourself) and you can even add a gift note to specify which teacher/class collection it’s for!

Story Writing Club

This week saw the final Story Writing Club session - my favourite of the term, as it’s when the children who have been busy getting creative get to share their stories and ideas with the rest of us! Often with this club, I have children who start on a thousand different ideas and don’t necessarily flesh any of them out, but this term the majority of my writers stuck with their initial ideas and really worked on the detail of them, with at least three full stories emerging in time for the final week! Attention to detail has been a real focus with this group, even when we’ve played creative games to spark the imagination, and their ideas have all been well-thought-out and complete! Well done Story Writers - and remember, if any of you finish your stories at home I want to see them!

Book Clubs

The Year 6 book club has moved on from Treasure Island to The Last Wild by Piers Torday, which I read for the first time this summer (along with its sequel, and threequel, and I excitedly await the prequel’s publication in paperback this Spring so I can add it to our collection!). They’ve really engaged with this text, both with the story and the different techniques used by Torday to create the story. So far this half-term we’ve spent time listening in silence, completing nature similes, and thinking about our ideal superpowers (I would choose to have the powers of the Human Torch, who makes instantaneous fire and can fly). I’ve been really impressed with the children's participation in this text and I know more than one of them have already finished it! In our final session at the end of term, they’ll be predicting what happens in books 2 and 3, and I’m interested to see how close they get to what actually happens next.

In addition to Year 6 we’ve also started a Year 2 book club once a fortnight. At the moment we are reading the BFG and so far we’ve enjoyed talking about the characters and comparing them to other characters we’ve read about.

Recommendations

Obviously, this month’s recommendations are all Christmas books!

A Boy Called Christmas (trilogy) by Matt Haig

These books were around last year but this year A Boy Called Christmas has been released as a film, so why not read the book first? Written in response to the question “what was Father Christmas like as a child?”, A Boy Called Christmas has all the necessary components of a Father Christmas origin story - elves, reindeer, magic, hope, and chocolate! In short, it’s the story of a boy called Nikolas who goes to live in Elfhelm after losing his father, and grows up to be Father Christmas. It feels truly festive and heartwarming and, as with his books for adults, Matt Haig writes about human emotion very simply and effectively.

The Miracle on Ebenezer Street by Catherine Doyle

Catherine Doyle wrote one of my favourite (three) books read this year, The Storm Keeper’s trilogy, and her adaptation of Dickens’ classic does not disappoint. I read it in one sitting and to me it ranks up there with the Muppets’ Christmas Carol in terms of excellency - the story is modern and different whilst still being faithful to the core of A Christmas Carol, Doyle’s writing is lyrical and full of integrity, and there’s a purple reindeer - what more could you want?

Mince Spies by Mark Sperring & Sophie Corrigan

There’s chaos in the supermarket - all the sweet treats are being destroyed and nobody knows how it’s happening! Fortunately, the Mince Spies are on the case, and with the help of a certain gentleman dressed in red, they uncover the culprits and restore order to the shelves. The true highlight of this book is the illustrations of mince pies (and other festive foods) in action.
