A Message from OWPS

Dear Parents and Carers,

What an incredible final full week of school. It was already going to be a busy week and then we had some visitors pop in to see us on Tuesday and Wednesday! We are now all ready to enjoy the final couple of days of school when we will say our final goodbye to our Year Six children with the drive-thru after school on Monday.

Year Six Production

I have now seen twenty-one Year Six end-of-year productions and I can remember quite a few of them. Darwin Rocks is one I will not forget for a long time. I watched the afternoon performance alongside family members of the Year Six children and a governor (Karen Hales) and it was incredible. Possibly the best singing I have heard in a Wistow production and the complexity and challenging dialogue of this play was perfectly executed by the whole team. I know the evening performance gained a standing ovation and Mr. Eardley was invited back to enjoy the show and told me how impressed he was with the Year Six children. Well done to all involved.

Ofsted Inspection

There isn't a perfect time for Ofsted to call and inspect a school but the final full week of the year is an unlikely week to be chosen by any headteacher. However, we thought a visit was likely after they had recently inspected the other two schools in the Trust and we were well prepared. I am unable to share the details or outcomes of the inspection at this point, the report will be shared with you all once it has been officially published. This is likely to be in September. We had three inspectors for the two days and it was a graded inspection. We all feel that the team were fair and I am happy that they recognised all the wonderful things we do at our school and how fantastic our pupils are. Thank you to all of you for supporting the school and for completing the parent survey. All three inspectors commented on the positive relationship we have with our families and this was reflected in the surveys and comments made. The staff were amazing. They pulled together and shone at a time when we are normally ready to relax a little and just enjoy the final few days in school. The inspectors spoke to a lot of the children over the two days and they were all impressed with how polite, positive and articulate they all were. They followed the PRIDE Code throughout and I am very proud of them all.

New Start Time

One small change to the school day will begin on September 4th. Our gates will open at 8.35am for ten minutes, closing at 8.45am. Registration will begin at 8.45am and all children need to be in class by this time. We have had to adjust the school day by five minutes to ensure we are open for the correct amount of time that all schools have to be from September 1st.

The End of The Year

Your children will be coming home with books and other items from school this week as we do a deep clean over the summer and try to empty as many spaces as possible. When I had a class of my own it was always quite incredible what was found in trays and lockers at the end of the school year! I have been thinking a lot about my first year as Headteacher of Orton Wistow Primary School these past few weeks and how much I have enjoyed the role. I have learned an incredible amount over these three terms! I continue to love working at this school and the main reason for this is the wonderful pupils, supportive families and amazing team I work alongside each day. Thank you all for another amazing year. I am excited about September and the plans I have for moving our school on but I think we need and will all enjoy the summer break first!

Good luck to our Year Six leavers and Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Edwards who we also said goodbye to today. Every year we also say goodbye to some families who have sometimes been part of the school for a very long time. I hope you come back and see us at the events we hold. Be safe, enjoy the break and see you back in school on Monday 4th September.

Celebrating Success

Here at Orton Wistow Primary School, we recognise that success comes in all different shapes and sizes! We celebrate the children's achievements in school in the Achievements section of the newsletter and website.

Many of the children, however, are also achieving things outside of school.  We would like to recognise these successes too.

It might be that your child has passed a music or dance exam, gained a karate belt, starred in a show, volunteered, taken part in a sporting event, or done something that they didn't think was possible!

If you would like to share your child's achievements with us so that we can celebrate their success, please complete the Celebrating Success form which can also be found below.  Contributions will be considered for inclusion in upcoming editions of the newsletter.

We look forward to hearing about your children's extracurricular achievements!

This Week's Successes!

On 7th May 2023, Danny took part in the 5k race for life with his mum. Last year Danny's mum was diagnosed with cervical cancer and as soon as he knew she was racing he wanted to take part with her a raise awareness. In his words "hopefully the money raised will help save more people mum" On top of all that, the race was completed in 30 minutes! Well done!

This year 5 student has shown dedication and perseverance to music, singing and piano for more than 4 years, studying more recently for 10+ hours a week. She loves all things musical and recently successfully auditioned for a Cambridge College Girls’ Choir starting in September - a massive achievement. Well done!

FOWS Update

Friends of Orton Wistow School Update – Please take 3 minutes to read this, if nothing else it might make you smile ??

Dear Fellow Parents and Carers aka Friends of Orton Wistow School,

WE MADE IT!  As the school year ends, it is my utmost pleasure to write this final newsletter article for the FOWS update section, which is a long-winded way of saying, "Please, for the love of all things caffeinated and alcohol based, someone be my Vice Chair in September!"  It’s been my first year as Chair and the FOWS team have delivered all the regular events you have come to know and love (Break the Rules Day, Fairs, Discos etc) and raised over £8,000 but without a Vice Chair sadly it’s not sustainable when trying to juggle work and family too.

Over the last 11 months I’ve learnt that being Chair like being the captain of a ship navigating through a sea of chaos. It's a wild ride that leaves you with a long-lasting smile after an event and a craving for uninterrupted silence at the same time. And as much as I am proud of what we have achieved, my sanity (what's left of it) demands a second-in-command, a willing soul who's ready to embark on this rewarding but sometime exhausting adventure with me and the team.

So, I'm here to implore you, my fabulous fellow parents, to consider the FOWS Vice Chair position.  It's a glamorous role where you get to have a fancy title, and deal with a whole lot of unpredictability as well as spend time working out how many ice poles you need for the summer fair or coming up with fun new rules for Break the Rules Day. Plus, you'll finally understand what it feels like to experience both exhilaration and a desperate need for a nap at the same time.

What the team need is someone who can deputising for me (the Chair), when necessary as I do have a career and family that sometime need to take president over running a disco or going to bookers supplys, and the key function of the Vice-Chair is to help ensure that the Committee and all of the events continue to run smoothly.   The role would suit someone who is diplomatic, fair, enthusiastic, and can use their initiative to deal with whatever comes there way.  In terms of time commitment, I’m not going to lie it will take up some of your time (in peaks and troughs through the year depending on what’s in the events diary) but with a strong team the load will be shared and no one person will be expected to take an uneven share of the work.

Now, let me address the continuing issue of volunteering. We all know that volunteering can sometimes feel like being trapped in a never-ending carnival ride—fun at first, but eventually causing you to question your life choices. But fear not! Belonging to FOWS is not just any carnival ride; it's a roller coaster with an open bar at the end. Okay, maybe not literally (although on Wednesday we did celebrate the end of year with a drink or 2 at the Granary), but you'll find camaraderie, laughter, and a chance to make a difference in our children's lives, no matter how big or small your volunteering contribution is, from baking cakes to manning the sports day refreshment stand.

And let's not forget the fantastic perks of being a FOWS volunteer. You get to attend meetings that are basically a chance to escape from the kids for a couple of hours disguised as strategic planning sessions fuelled by Starbucks coffee (as that where we tend to meet). You'll master the art of juggling multiple tasks while pretending to remember everyone's name.  And who knows, you might even discover hidden talents like how to wrap 60 pairs of socks most efficiently for the Christmas sale or finding creative ways to stretch a budget thinner than a runway model.

So, dear parents, as we bid farewell to another unforgettable school year, let's rise to the occasion and make the next one even more memorable. Step up, volunteer, and join this rewarding adventure. Trust me, the chaos is more fun when you're a part of it. Together, we'll navigate the seas of sanity checks, forge friendships with likeminded people and make our children proud when they see what we can achieve for them by coming together.

If you're interested in the Vice Chair position or simply want to know more about volunteering opportunities, please reach out to us on our face book page or come along to our September coffee morning or AGM in the autumn term.

Thank you all for an incredible 1st year as Chair, and let's keep FOWS going without the need for yours truly ending up in a padded cell!

Have a fantastic summer break, we all deserve it.

OWN Trust Charity Day

A massive thank you to everyone who took part in the #owntrustcharityday2023.

We worked together to raise an amazing £1,257 for @macmillancancer.

On Friday 14th July, we had a representative from Macmillian Cancer Support come into the school to officially recognise the donations made by the children and parents, and a cheque was presented to them in assembly.
