The Wombats have thoroughly enjoyed exploring some new poetry this term. They were inspired by the poem ‘When The Colours Spoke’ by Grace Nichols, which led them to create beautiful watercolour paintings that reflected the colours and shades presented in the poem. Their inspiration didn’t stop there, the Year 5 children demonstrated their amazing writing skills by creating their own class version of the poem. This hangs proudly on the wall in the Wombats’ class.
During English, Courtney wrote a poem inspired by her artwork around colour and shape based on the poem 'When the Colours Spoke' from our class book 'Cosmic Disco'.
In Year 6, we have been studying Light as part of our science curriculum. Jamie from the Toucans has produced an information page all about Isaac Newton and his discoveries with light.
Writing from the perspective of August from Wonder, after a traumatic experience of betrayal, Gracie from the Sharks created this diary entry as part of our work in English.
George from the Toucans has written a descriptive piece, using dialogue accurately, about an image from 'The Dam' by David Almond.
In art this week, The Wombats have been investigating the work of L.S Lowry. Here is an example of the ideas that were collected in our sketch books to show the tones, textures and colours that Lowry used to create his renowned work.
Lily from the Sharks made this a WW2 propaganda poster aimed at the role of women during the war as part of our work in History.
As part of our 'British Monarchy' topic, the Sharks have been reading 'Suffragettes' by David Roberts, and thinking about the lack of equality women have suffered throughout history, even when women have been on the throne. Auriol's work shows the editing session, which takes place after we have completed a piece of writing in Year Six. You can see some of the Year Six GPS elements, which Auriol has used effectively.
This week Year 5 have been reading the Poem From a Railway Carriage by Robert Louis Stevenson. We have created some performance poetry and discussed what it might be like to be a passenger on a steam train. Evelyn from the Wombats wrote a super letter to describe her journey.
Momina from the Armadillos has used a wide range of sentence types in her descriptive writing to build tension, develop a rich image in the reader’s mind and keep the reader hooked in. Well done Momina!
Here is a piece of work by Ziba in the Toucans from our Reading Lessons. We had been studying the life of Harriet Tubman and read a book about her from the 'Little People, Big Dreams' series. Each child was then presented with this artistic mural and had to interpret and respond to the piece. Ziba has really thought carefully about this image and used some powerful phrases to express her thoughts.
