  • Children in Need- Friday 15.11.24

    Published 22/11/24

Thank you to everyone who donated to Children In Need. We raised £684!

Below are a couple of articles, written by children in Year 6, talking about the day.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Children in Need is the BBC’s charity for disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.

To help support Children in Need, we had a dress down day, where you brought in a pound to wear your own clothes, and you could bring in fifty pence for a biscuit. We had an assembly to understand what Children in Need is and why wearing something yellow or spotty is important.

  • OBA Voices Visit

    Published 22/11/24

On Tuesday 19th November, we had a fabulous assembly from some of the students at OBA. Their Music teacher, Mr Ferreira, brought along some of his choir - the OBA Voices, and they performed several songs for us. We enjoyed listening to group performances and soloists, and our pupils were engrossed in the performances. At the end of the assembly, we all joined together to sing 'This Is Me' from The Greatest Showman. The assembly has been the talk of the school today, we really hope it has inspired some of our pupils - and there was even talk of a teacher choir being set up! Thank you to Mr Ferreira, the other adults, and the students from OBA. We are looking forward to future collaborations with OBA.

  • Year 4 Family Learning

    Published 22/11/24

By Mrs Granville, Year 4 Class Teacher.

On Tuesday 12th November, Year 4 held their Family Learning in the School Hall.  The focus of this was Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.  We shared the expectations of the Year 4 curriculum, and then children and adults learnt more about sentence types and punctuation, inverted commas, expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials, before applying these to write a story opening based on a picture of a mysterious ship.  The event was very well attended, and Mrs Granville and Mr Nolan were very impressed with the quality of the writing that the children produced with support from their parent/ carer.  We’d like to thank everyone for attending and for your continued support as we move through the year.

  • Year 3 Flag Fen Trip

    Published 19/11/24

By Mrs Ironside, Year 3 class teacher.

Year 3 visited Flag Fen Archaeology Park on Wednesday 13th November. The children were there to investigate and explore life from the Stone Age through to the Iron Age, enhancing their learning around their history topic of 'Stone Age to Iron Age'.

The children had a fantastic day and experienced lots of activities which enabled us to showcase our knowledge of life in prehistoric times. We explored replica and genuine artefacts dating to 5000BC, created clay pots as part of an experimental archaeology activity to see if children might have been involved in the making of pots or was it a skilled task only accessible to adults. We toured the whole site and finally took part in a story activity in an Iron Age roundhouse.

The children had a wonderful time, and really enjoyed the opportunity to get hands on with the artifacts and see their classroom-based learning come to life. Their analytical historical enquiry skills were really put to the test!

The staff were extremely impressed with both the behaviour and the knowledge of the children.

  • School Car Park

    Published 15/11/24

We have noticed an increase in Parents using our staff car park at the beginning and end of the school day.

We have a limited amount of spaces in the car park which are required for our staff and for families who need to use our school car park for accessible parking, and external visitors such as those companies running after school sports clubs.

Therefore, please can we ask that parents refrain from using the school car park unless you have a prior arrangement with school for accessible parking and use the alternative parking provisions around the area such as Tesco Car park or the parking bays on Wistow Way.

    Thank you for your co-operation.

  • Year 5 New Theatre Trip

    Published 15/11/24

Year 5 had a wonderful trip to The New Theatre this week, where they were lucky enough to meet author, Frank Cottrell-Boyce and enjoy a show from him. He taught us all about his inspiration for writing ✍️, his recent publication (which we all got a copy of) and even did a few magic tricks before we left. Did you know he scripted the famous sketch of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Paddington Bear? Happy reading Year 5! 📚

  • Year 1 Family Learning

    Published 15/11/24

On Thursday 7th of November, the Year 1 grown-ups and children flooded the hall for the first time to attend their Family Learning.  It was an English focus, linking to the story, ‘The Jolly Postman’.  We re-read the story, and then focused on the letter to Cinderella.

Miss Wyatt modelled how to write a sentence using adjectives, Year 1 then had a go at completing one together to describe the wicked stepmother and stepsisters before practising writing their own.  Thank you to all the grown-ups who came to support us, and we hope you found it helpful learning alongside your child.

  • Celebrating Success 08.11.24

    Published 08/11/24

Here at Orton Wistow Primary School, we recognise that success comes in all different shapes and sizes! We celebrate the children's achievements in school in the Achievements section of the newsletter and website.

Many of the children, however, are also achieving things outside of school.  We would like to recognise these successes too.

It might be that your child has passed a music or dance exam, gained a karate belt, starred in a show, volunteered, taken part in a sporting event, or done something that they didn't think was possible!

If you would like to share your child's achievements with us so that we can celebrate their success, please complete the Celebrating Success form which can also be found below.  Contributions will be considered for inclusion in upcoming editions of the newsletter.

We look forward to hearing about your children's extracurricular achievements!

    This Week's Successes!

This child in Year 4 has been boxing for over 4 years and is a really skilled fighter. Her technique is excellent, and she has recently been awarded a medal from the boxing gym for her sparring achievements. Congratulations!

Artist of the Term- Celebration of Artwork

Over the past few weeks, children across the school have been keen to show me their amazing outer space and rocket artwork inspired by Peter Thorpe as part of the Autumn Artist of the Term Project. In Think Time Thursday assemblies this week, the children shared and celebrated their artwork with their class. It was brilliant to see how many children took part in the project and the incredible artwork that was created. Artwork included vibrant paintings, detailed drawings, colourings, collages and sculptures of rockets and planets all showcasing great creativity! Thank you to all the pupils who completed the project and all the adults involved with supporting their child to create the artwork. I look forward to launching the Spring Term Artist of the Term project in the new year.
